Contrave

Contrave is a weight loss drug, developed by Orexigen Therapeutics, which continues to undergo great difficulty in getting FDA approval. The drug has shown that it raises blood pressure, increases pulse rate, and may pose a danger to heart health. Contrave is currently undergoing a widespread study to determine its long-term effects on the cardiovascular system. There have been a number of weight loss pills that have lost approval, been removed from the market, or have been required to undergo changes before being distributed for use. It is unknown when or if Contrave will be FDA approved. Orexigen Therapeutics is embarking on an extensive and costly clinical trial that will take at least two years to complete. Ten thousand patients have been targeted to participate in the study as well.

The developments in Contrave highlight growing concern that obesity and weight loss drugs can wreak havoc on the heart and cause long-term problems. Other drugs currently awaiting approval include Qnexa and Iorcaserin. It is important to realize that obesity in itself is very damaging to the heart. Those who are overweight or obese are at an increased risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, arthritis, and certain cancers. There is great debate regarding the need for new weight loss drugs and whether the side effects inherent in certain drugs pose a greater threat than the dangers of being overweight or obese.

Contrave is a combination of the drugs Naltrexone and Bupropion. Early studies have shown that the prescription drug is an effective weight loss pill that when combined with exercise and a sensible, healthy diet can help those struggling with obesity to jumpstart their weight loss. Contrave promises to promote weight loss by suppressing appetite and speeding metabolism. The combination of both is extremely beneficial as patients can burn more calories while eating less. Weight loss may also be achieved by speeding up the process and stimulating areas of the brain that control pleasure. Contrave affects the hypothalamus and helps produce serotonin and endorphins. When combined with exercise the benefits are accentuated and can help make weight loss easy to obtain. As both medicines, Naltrexone and Bupropion have been on the market for several decades, Orexigen believes that Contrave will be proved a safe, effective, and efficient way to lose weight.

As it will take approximately two years for clinical trials to continue, the public at large is not in a position to take Contrave at this time. Those who are overweight or obese and interested in taking prescription weight loss pills will need to speak to their health care provider to determine the best method available. Getting new weight loss medicines approved is a slow process. Those interested in taking Contrave may find their best bet is participating in a clinical trial. Speak to your health care provider regarding any interest you might have in taking Contrave.

With approximately 66% of all adults either morbidly obese, severely overweight, or overweight, finding an effective weight loss drug is of the utmost importance. It is also important, however, that the prescription medications taken for obesity are not only safe, but effective as well. There are alternative medications available that some may be better suited for. Let your health care provider know of any over-the-counter weight loss supplements, herbal remedies, or prescription medications that you are currently taking. Though it might seem that over-the-counter remedies are safe, they can have a reaction with various prescription medications. It is also possible for one medicine to counteract the benefits of another medication. You must ensure that your health care provider completely understands your current health situation, any underlying disorders you are dealing with and every medication, including vitamins and minerals that you are taking. By working with your health care provider and keeping an open dialogue of communication, you can ensure that you find the most effective and safest weight loss plan to help you reach your goals.
